Christmas in Crete

The Cretan Christmas tradition is one of those unique customs you don’t see in most places. It starts on Christmas Eve and ends at the Epiphany (January 6th). We all know that Christmas is a time of joy and giving to those around you, and this is especially true in Crete. One of the things the locals do to celebrate this time of year is to place a special decoration called a “kandylidon” on a string. On Christmas Eve, they light this decoration and it represents a beacon of hope for all who can see it.
